Welcome to Congress 2008
INVITATION FROM THE CHAIR
Welcome to the Population Health Congress to be held in Brisbane in 2008, and thank you for considering being a sponsor or exhibitor for this event.
This congress is historic in that it is the first time that four population health organisations have come together to hold a joint event. This collaboration is planned to occur every four years and as such provides sponsors and exhibitors with an excellent opportunity to reach a large audience (expected to be around 800 people at this inaugural event) from a wide range of population health backgrounds including medical, primary health care, health promotion, epidemiology and public and environmental health.
This congress has the title of A Global World Practical Action for Health and Well-being and has three sub-themes Environment and Health, Social Cohesion,
Social Capital and Health and Food and Health. These sub-themes in themselves will provide a very interesting structure to the congress, and are diverse enough to ensure that the congress will have broad appeal to sponsors.
I encourage you to get involved in this event as population health and population health practitioners are an important market with a strong interest in health promoting and environmentally friendly products and services.
We look forward to having you along to this historic event.
Adrian Heard
DATE AND VENUE
The Congress will take place from 69 July 2008, at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, set on the beautiful Southbank precinct. Brisbane in July is the most liveable of Australia's major cities. With a July maximum of 20°C and a minimum of 10°C it is a place many Australians head for in winter.
The easy access to the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and the Lamington Plateau all makes Brisbane a very popular destination. The Convention & Exhibition Centre is adjacent to the Brisbane River and to an attractive restaurant and shopping precinct. It is quite simply one of Australias best Congress venues.
CONGRESS THEMES
There will be a very engaging program around the theme A Global World Practical Action for Health
and Well-Being. The program will also include three sub-themes, which will each be the focus of one day of the Congress. These sub-themes are:
Environment and Health
Social Cohesion, Social Capital and Health
Food and Health

on the health of Australia's people. Ian is also regarded as one of Australia's most engaging and entertaining speakers.

promote healthier supermarket food purchases as part of the SHOP trial which she is
currently conducting in New Zealand.
Dr Jane Dixon Well known Australian expert on food and obesity, and renown for her
interesting theories on the causes of obesity in the population.
HOST ORGANISATIONS
The Population Health Congress is jointly sponsored by the four leading professional population health organisations in the Asia Pacific region: the Public Health Association of Australia, the Australian Health Promotion Association, the Australasian Epidemiological Association and the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine.
Together these organisations undertake and promote research, professional development, mentoring, training, information, teaching, advocacy and policy development across the full range of population
health subject areas, including medical, primary health care, health promotion, epidemiology and public and environmental health.
DELEGATE PROFILE
Congress 2008 replaces the four annual conferences usually conducted individually by the organisations. The historic cooperation of these organisations has created an environment for a very large gathering of population health professionals, and will provide the opportunity for working across and within organisations on key population health issues, as well as unparalleled opportunities for networking.
It provides a significant opportunity to access, at the one time, more than 800 national and international delegates from across the population health continuum, with most delegates drawn from the Asia Pacific region and employed in not-for-profit organisations, local, state and federal government, universities, research institutions and hospitals.
